Big Basin Redwoods State Park is the oldest State Park in California. It was acquired in 1902. The park has miles of trails, which serves hikers and equestrians, links Big Basin to Castle Rock State Park and the eastern reach of the Santa Cruz range. The Skyline to the Sea Trail threads its way through the park along Waddell Creek to the ocean. Backpacking trailcamps on the Skyline to the Sea Trail are reservable only by calling (831)338-8861 between the hours of 9am - 5pm. The park has a surprising number of waterfalls, a wide variety of environments (from lush canyon bottoms to sparse chaparral-covered slopes, many animals (deer, raccoons, an occasional bobcat) and lots of bird life (including Steller's jays, egrets, herons and California woodpeckers). The park is also the home to stately redwood groves. Fees include entry for 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle or trailer, additional vehicles will be charged per night at the park. Although your site may hold 2 or more vehicles, your reservation only covers 1 vehicle (except for group or specialty sites). Your DMV Disabled Placard/License Plate must be presented upon check-in if you have a reservation for an ADA site. Failure to do so will result in the campsite being forfeited. Your DMV Disabled Placard/License Plate does not automatically give you a discount on your campsite. You will need to obtain a CA State park-issued Disabled Discount Pass (DDP) or Distinguished Veterans Pass (DVP). Occupancy by the same persons, equipment, or vehicles of the Santa Cruz District's camping facilities is limited to a total of 30 days in any calendar year. These facilities include: Sunset SB campground, Manresa SB campground, Seacliff SB campground, New Brighton SB campground, Henry Cowell Redwoods SP campground, Big Basin Redwoods SP campground, and Portola Redwoods SP campground.
